Therapeutic Counselling

Private Therapeutic Counselling for Young People 12 - 18

Therapeutic Counselling

Adolescence can be a complex and emotional time. Young people may face challenges around identity, relationships, school pressure, family changes, anxiety, low mood, or feeling like they don’t quite fit in.

As a Therapeutic Counsellor, I offer a safe, supportive space for young people aged 12–18 to explore what’s going on for them. My approach is rooted in empathy, creativity and collaboration. I don’t come with a fixed agenda, I listen closely, respond to what they bring, and work at their pace.

Every young person is different, so I draw on a range of therapeutic methods depending on their needs and preferences. This may include talking therapy, creative exploration (such as sand tray, imagery, journaling or visual tools), or helping them to build emotional awareness and confidence in their own way.

When working with a young person under 18, we will agree together, with both them and their parent/guardian, what information can be shared, and what should remain confidential. My aim is always to balance the young person’s autonomy with my safeguarding responsibilities, and to support healthy communication between you.

Above all, I aim to offer a consistent and trusting space where young people feel heard, accepted, and understood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does counselling start with a parent or carer consultation?

Before counselling begins, I meet with a parent or carer to understand what’s been going on, gather background information, and think together about how counselling might help. This helps me support the young person safely and appropriately. It also gives parents or carers a chance to ask questions and feel clear about the process.

Will my parent or carer be told what I talk about in sessions?

No — counselling is a private space for you. What you share in sessions stays confidential unless there is a concern about safety. At the start, we agree together (you, your parent/carer and me) what information can be shared and what stays private. This helps build trust and respect.

Why is privacy important at this age?

Between the ages of 12 and 18, young people are developing independence, identity and a sense of self. Having a private, supportive space can make it easier to talk honestly about thoughts, feelings and experiences. Privacy helps counselling feel safe and meaningful, while still keeping safeguarding at the centre.

Are there times when confidentiality might be broken?

Yes — but only in specific situations. I would need to share information if:

  • I believe you or someone else is at risk of serious harm
  • You tell me something that raises concerns
  • I am legally required to share information

If possible, I will always try to talk with you first about what needs to happen and why.

What kinds of things can counselling help with?

Counselling can help with lots of different things, including:

  • Anxiety, stress or low mood
  • Friendship or relationship worries
  • School pressure or feeling overwhelmed
  • Changes at home or in family life
  • Confidence, identity or feeling unsure about yourself
  • Big feelings that are hard to explain

You don’t need a “big problem” to come to counselling — it’s okay to just need space to talk.

Will you judge my choices or coping mechanisms?

No. Not Ever. This is a non-judgemental, shame-free space. I’m here to support you in understanding your experience, reconnecting with your needs and values, and moving toward a healthier relationship with yourself, whatever choices you make.

Can my parent or carer speak to you while I’m having counselling?

Yes. I offer parent/carer check-ins to share general themes or progress, without breaking your privacy. This helps everyone feel supported and involved in a healthy way.

Is counselling available online as well as in person?

Yes. Counselling can take place in person or online, depending on what works best for you and your family.
